Starting January 1, 2027, benefit-eligible employees in the MU Health Care business unit are eligible for additional family building benefits as part of their university medical insurance plan. These enhanced benefits are designed to support paths to parenthood, including coverage for expenses related to fertility treatment and adoption.

Fertility Treatment

Coverage

The infertility services benefit helps cover eligible fertility treatments for eligible members who receive a diagnosis of infertility.

  • Up to $15,000 in lifetime medical benefits for fertility treatment
  • Up to $10,000 in lifetime pharmacy benefits related to fertility treatment

The benefit is subject to a lifetime maximum of $25,000 per individual. The limit does not reset if coverage changes from your own university medical plan to coverage under a spouse's university medical plan.

Eligibility

Accessing fertility benefits requires:

  1. Enrollment in a University medical plan as an eligible MU Health Care employee, spouse or sponsored adult dependent.
    • Dependent children are not eligible for the program.
  2. A diagnosis of infertility.
  3. Enrollment in UnitedHealthcare's Fertility Solutions program (available Jan. 1, 2027).
    • You must enroll in UHC's Fertility Solutions before receiving covered infertility services. Services received before enrollment are not eligible for coverage under this benefit.

Getting Started with Fertility Treatment

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, call UnitedHealthcare Fertility Solutions at 1-866-774-4626 to enroll and learn more about available services. Any call to Fertility Solutions will initiate enrollment, including calls to ask questions about the program.

Fertility Solutions can connect members with fertility Centers of Excellence, a network of providers that specialize in fertility care. Use of a Center of Excellence is optional, and covered services may be received from any eligible in-network provider that meets program requirements.

For Columbia Custom Network Plan enrollees, covered infertility services generally must be provided by an MU Health Care network provider. If needed services are not available within the network, your physician may request a gap authorization for out-of-network care. UHC fertility Centers of Excellence are considered out-of-network for this plan.

Adoption Support

Coverage

The adoption support benefit helps offset expenses associated with adopting a child.

  • Up to $10,000 per eligible child for qualified adoption expenses.
  • If siblings are adopted at the same time and each adoption qualifies, the per-child maximum applies to each child.
  • If spouses or sponsored adult dependents are both employed by the University and complete an adoption together, the maximum reimbursement is $10,000 per adoption event.

Eligibility

To qualify for reimbursement:

  • The adoption must become final on or after Jan. 1, 2027, and after the employee's hire date, whichever is later.
  • Reimbursement is available after final adoption documentation is submitted and approved.
  • An eligible child must be under age 18 or physically or mentally incapable of self-care when adoption expenses are incurred.
  • Expenses related to adopting the child of a spouse or sponsored adult dependent are not eligible for reimbursement.

Qualified Expenses

Reimbursement may include reasonable and necessary expenses that have not been reimbursed by another source, such as:

  • Agency, placement and home-study fees
  • Legal, court, immigration and translation fees
  • Required medical expenses
  • Counseling related to placement and adjustment
  • Temporary foster care costs
  • Travel expenses, meals and lodging (fuel/mileage excluded)
